We had a very exciting range of activities during Book Week at the beginning of March this year. It began with a wonderful visit from former St. Maelruain’s teacher and author, Gillian Perdue. Ms Perdue read from two of her books, Conor’s Cowboy and Adam’s Starling. She had all the boys and girls from Junior Infants to 2nd Class engaged in some cowboy moves and a great dance workshop for the boys and girls in the senior classes.
Every class throughout the school was encouraged to design a book cover and the teachers all taught specific lessons on the features of a book cover. The book covers produced by the children of St. Maelruain’s were definitely worthy to be published by any publishing company.
The week concluded with our celebration of World Book Day and dress-up day. Some of the children really thought about their favourite characters and put in a lot of effort into recreating the character. Even the teachers joined in. We think everyone will agree that seeing Mr Higgins as the giraffe from Giraffes Can’t Dance is a vision that will not be forgotten any time soon.
Author, Gillian Perdue, ran a colouring competition amongst the Junior and Senior Infants based on her book, Conor’s Cowboy. The prize winners were announced following the Easter holidays as Annabelle, Liam, Amaz and Karson. They are delighted with their prizes from O’Brien’s Press.
